What is a radar?

By definition a radar is an object-detection system that uses radio waves to determine a series of facts (including range, altitude, direction and speed) of either or both a moving and fixed object. The word radar comes from the acronym RADAR which was first used by the US Navy referenced for radar detection and ranging.Over the years radars have evolved and can be used to do a number of activities such as air traffic control, antimissile systems, ocean surveillance systems, outer-space surveillance, meteorological monitoring, radar astronomy, among other.
